“Sometimes a great notion” 32” x 48” 2014.tif
  • Jorg Dubin – a painter, sculptor, ceramist and production designer – arrived in Laguna in 1976 and has since, consistently produced intelligent and thought-provoking work. No one would call Laguna Beach artist, Jorg Dubin, conservative in his approach to art making.  His work is provocative, intentionally unsettling and strives to evoke strong emotion and reflection.  His paintings combine beguiling portraiture with the urgency of current social and political times. They ask the viewer questions and prompt an inward reflection on issues commonly skirted, such as the definition of beauty, the current political climate, social, sexual and economic bias, and ironic whimsy.

Jorg Dubin has worked for over 45 years to push the boundaries of social discourse through his provocative paintings, sculpture and ceramics.  “Historically, when there are big social changes or ideological clashes in the world, writers, poets and visual artists are the ones who created manifestos or visual imagery of those changing times,” Dubin said. “I’ve always been drawn to work that evokes thought in the viewer. It resonates with me because I have always felt that artists are the documentarians of the visual historic record of the times they live in.

Stu News wrote, “At its most profound level, art takes us from the everyday to a place of introspection and contemplation, to see the bigger picture of the human condition, and Dubin’s work, in whatever emotionally charged form it takes, is always thought-provoking.”

Dubin enlists friends and acquaintances to model for his paintings. On occasion he uses professional models but prefers the authenticity that non-professionals bring to the finished paintings. “Their modesty and comfort levels add truth to the subject,” he states.

He spent his early childhood in Oregon and Wisconsin.  His parents were college professors which took Jorg and his sibling across the world to Munich, Geneva and London in his formative teen years.   Ultimately landing in Corona del Mar for his high school education.  It was at CDM he discovered ceramics and found an early mentor in his teacher, George Corey.

He studied drawing and painting at the Southern California Art Institute with painter Stephen Douglas. Sculpture and design with Kris Cox and Richard White. He was an early member of the Santa Ana Heights Ceramics Collective and a professor of advanced figure painting at the Laguna College of Art and Design. He worked in the entertainment industry as an art director and production designer for O Entertainment on over seven films. Dubin currently maintains a painting and sculpture studio in Laguna Beach.
